Emergency crews were called shortly after 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27, with reports of a crash involving a pedestrian in Commack, near Scholar Lane and Shaker Ridge Lane, according to Suffolk County Police.

A preliminary investigation found that a 31-year-old woman was driving an SUV eastbound on Scholar Lane when she struck Matthew Conte, of Commack. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The driver was taken to Saint Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown for evaluation. She has not been criminally charged. Police impounded her vehicle to undergo safety testing.

Detectives are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact Suffolk County Police at 631-854-8452.
